Ayoyo Khir Toyo

1st April 2009 NOT an April Fool's Joke (the Star)

Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd (PNSB) spent about RM1.7mil for former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Khir Toyo, wife, children, their maid and the company’s official to tour France, Morocco and United States.

PNSB CEO Datin Khairiyah Abu Hassan, who testified before the Selangor State Assemblys Selcat Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency Wednesday, said the trips included two study tours to Disneyland in Paris and Orlando.

Close to RM1mil, including expenses for Dr Khir, his wife Datin Seri Zaharah Kechik, their three children, their maid and a groundlaying, was paid for the tour to Morocco and France.

The inquiry also heard that PNSB paid some RM750,000 for the trip to United States, which comprised RM110,000 in suites for Dr Khir and entrance tickets to Disneyland.

More to come....(really)

Running

ADIDAS KING OF THE ROAD 21 K 2008 SHAH ALAM

The good old days:

Sadly, since starting with this blog, there's been no posting on races or runs. It's been a barren 3 months. The last race I did was the IOI Race when I ran 5 km and got a voucher for high tea, but did not get around to going 'cos the hotel concern is in PUTRAJAYA. That's right, I have go all the way there for a weekend high tea. On retrospect, I shoulda given it to someone who would have enjoyed it. Oh well.

For this year, I've missed the GE 30 K race, the Melawati run, the Wild Wild run at the Zoo among other smaller races. Next one coming up: Orange Run 11 km on 12th April which is FREE. Am now considering this race to gauge my fitness, but I suspect I'm, going to be disappointed 'cos I've hardly been training hard enough. Even Hash has taken a back seat; My weekend attendance is so intermittent that the subs paid is like giving away $$.

As for last week, absolutely no exercise except the recce on Monday which was a slow walk that took 3 hours. Then zilch as this came up last week:

Graduation at USM Penang on 25th March 2009. Got to Penang 7 pm 24th March, and left at 9 pm 25th March. What a trip.

I've been trying to keep the lack of running in the right perspective. God has given me 10 good running years. I've enjoyed myself with races, winning finisher's medals, the early mornings, the race crowd, the 21 ks and the full marathons. While I wish I could keep on going at the same rate, there's other stuffs to consider too. God has the bigger picture, so I need to trust in Him. He's always delivered. Praise Him!!

(Thank God too for the auto-save device of this program; the loading so slow and the internet keeps triping now and then)

So Orange Run, Here I come!

Bukit Tabur

Update: Bukit Tabur Tragedy

Chinese Papers reports that the families of both doctors were training for Mount KK hike.

This seems a logical explanation and should put all speculations to rests. However, shouldn't the English media also mention something to this effect., if true? Whichever way you look at it, the tragedy may and could have been avoided if they had opted to go as a group, with other like minded companions, or least with an experienced hiker.
Those who regularly participate in such activiites would know that first and foremost, it is imperative not to go alone or at least with an experienced person.
Secondly, time and light is of the essence. Make sure there is enough time to go in and get out before darkness falls, failing which always carry a torch. Thirdly, make sure that one is adequately prepared in terms of footwear, clothing, food, water, first aid, and ever the life saver, handphone. (May not be able to use if no signal but at least still handy as torchlight and in certain cases, be used as a tracking device!).

Mount KK is becoming increasingly popular as destination for hikers and tourists out for a different kind of holiday. Those who are likewise planning hiking trips to build up their fitness need always to remember this tragic incident to take the best necessary precautions.

At this moment, our condolences go to the families of the late doctors.

Tragedy at Bukit Tabur

This would serve as a dire reminder to hikers and trekkers alike that anything can and could happen while trekking (The Star):

Missing doctors found dead

KUALA LUMPUR: Two specialist doctors, missing since Wednesday, were found dead in a ravine near the Klang Gates in Ulu Ampang yesterday.

Dr Haliza

A search-and-rescue team took over an hour to airlift the bodies from the thickly forested terrain.

Police believe the two – paediatrician Dr Haliza Mohd Shafie, 53, and paediatric surgeon Dr Amin Tai Abdullah @ Tai Yen Ming, 57 – slipped and fell about 200m after they had gone hiking.

Their car was found at the popular hikers’ spot in Bukit Melawati at 7am. Jungle trekking gear and the duo’s cellular phones were found in the car.

A full-scale search-and-rescue operation was launched by the police, Fire and Rescue, and Public Works Departments, after Dr Haliza’s husband confirmed the car belonged to her.

Tracker dogs and a helicopter search spotted the two at around 2.15pm, said Ampang Deputy OCPD Supt Amiruddin Jamaluddin.

Dr Amin Tai

“The injuries on the bodies were consistent with a fall,” he said.

The decomposing bodies were sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem.

Both specialists were attached with a medical centre in Ampang.

Their families made a police report when they did not return home on Wednesday night, State Chief Police Officer Deputy Commissioner Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said on Friday.

It was earlier reported that a security guard at the nearby dam saw two people heading into the jungle on Wednesday but did not see them return.

Some infor on Bukit Tabur:

Bukit (hill) Tabur (sprinkle) (or Bukit Taboh(fistfight), to some people) offers a chance for any climbers to see KL view. In fact, it is an ideal spot to enjoy fireworks play during new year or national day.(Apart from another mountain ; Gunung Bunga Buah, near Genting)

It is an easy climb considering a six-year old kid could manage
the route. However, don't underestimate this hill. It is something like 'strolling' along the range of hill peaks that you could see from the MRR2 highway.Plus, a lil' bit of rock climbing has to be done.Sort of MI2 scene. But, it could be quite dangerous if you do not know the tricks. The climb would take around 2 hours and another 45 minutes to scale down using another route ( would pass through fruit orchard)

Assuming you are from Karak highway, and to reach the intake at Klang Gate Dam, you have to take the left corner at Melawati area. (Giant supermarket @ commercial are would be on your right). Then, you could see food stalls on your left. Just go straight till you see an aroundabout. Take 9 o'clock turn. Go straight till you reach the second roundabout and take a 12 o'clock.

Here, you would pass a residential area, then turn right at the T-junction. Follow the sloping and turning roads. Make sure you do not take the turn into any guarded houses there.
Finally, you would encounter a Y-junction and turn left. To check this junction, there is a garbage area at the middle of the junction, and a bungalow if you turn right. Keep on until you see entrance of Klang Gate Dam. But remember, you don't have to enter the dam. The intake point is beside the gate. Check out the 'wall divider' near the gate.

Some pics of Bukit Tabur:

"Bukit Tabur, or Tabur Hill, is a magnificent limestone ridge that is, surprisingly, relatively unrecognised, despite being located in the immediate vicinity of Kuala Lumpur. The foot of the limestone ridge can be accessed through Taman Melawati, a residential area, at the entrance of the Klang Gates Dam. Bukit Tabur is also considered the longest crystal quartz outcrop in the world, making it a truly priceless geological wonder."

More infor:

Bukit Tabur is located in the District of Gombak in Selangor. It is also localy known as Bukit Hangus. The hill is very prominent and could be seen from the Middle Ring Road 2 travelling from Seri Gombak to Ampang. The hill could be access through Taman Melawati by following the Genting Klang Road which will lead to the Klang Gate Dam.

The hill, which is less than 1000 meters, is a quartz/limestone combination formation. Climbers enter the hiking trail via Kampung Klang Gates, 50 meters from the gates of the Klang Gates Dam, at the back of Taman Melawati for a quick 3-4 hours climb. The Gombak Forest Reserve and Klang Gates Dam are beside the hill. The peak offers spectacular view of the dam.

This, coming just after another trekker from RHB bank was lost/missing after a trek some 34 weeks ago in Perak and now presumed dead.

On a side note, the circumstances of the doctors' deaths is likely to raise questions as to why two colleagues of opposite sexes would want to undertake a trek by themselves instead of being in a group. Sad for their respective families but inevitable that the gossip mongers and speculation will go into overdrive here.

Ramblings: Umno shenanigans

Botakman...

Guess who got left out (and the MSM kept real quiet): extract from The Sun:

"Aside from Muhammad, who is Rural and Regional Development Minister, those who were defeated in the vice-presidential contests were:
> Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin
> Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim
> Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, who fought for the veep posts;

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad failed to get places in the supreme council.
Shahrir has since said he would tender his resignation from the Cabinet on Wednesday because the results showed he was no longer needed in the government.

While what Shahrir is doing is honourable, the fact is that cabinet appointments are the prerogative of the prime minister; and the criteria for appointment are varied, including the ability to get the job of governance done well."

Common knowledge that Datuk Shahrir is a rare breed of minister: honourable enough to acknowledge that he's not of the same clique of power hungry money grabbing ministers who look at their positions as a get rich quick opportunity, and perhaps did not resort to $$ politics? While the rest...? Hanging in there lah!

Botoxman....

And what about this dude and his missus who rampaged Balqis?

"Licking the wounds from his defeat at the Umno Youth polls on Wednesday, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo today admitted the Selangor Government's probe into the now-dissolved Selangor Elected Representatives’ Wives Charity and Welfare Association (Balkis) was mainly responsible for his loss."

He actually blames the Selangor (PKR) government!! What Mrs Botox got up to...visiting her son in Melbourne, no less, and getting some else to pick up the tab, on the orders of da Botoxman, of course. The full story, so far...(The Sun)

SHAH ALAM (March 25, 2009) : More than RM338,000 was spent for a Bakti sporting event hosted by Balkis, the wives of Selangor elected epresentatives charity and welfare organisation, in August 2007, the Selangor State Assembly's Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) heard today.

Datin Khairiyah Abu Hassan

The amount included RM131,000 spent on sporting attire, Datin Khairiyah Abu Hassan, chief executive officer of the state-owned Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd (PNSB), told Selcat which is investigating execesses by Balkis.

Selcat is chaired by Assembly Speaker Teng Chang Khim while its members are Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyman Azmin Ali, Taman Medan assemblyman Haniza Talha, Ulu Kelang assemblyman Shaari Sungib, Bukit Gasing assemblyman Edward Lee, Dusun Tua assemblyman Ismail Sani (BN), and Permatang assemblyman Sulaiman Abdul Razak (BN).

"The sportswear purchased by PNSB were tracksuits for 400 people and 180 liaison officers and everyone got four pairs," Khairiyah who was continuing her testimony from yesterday, said.

She said the sportswear was originally provided by the Malaysian Sports Council (MSN) but had failed to meet the criteria set by Balkis.

"MSN should have supplied the sportswear but as they did not meet the Balkis specification, we were directed to buy new ones," she said.

Khairiyah said only three sports were organised for the games -- telematch, bowling and badminton.

"The total amount, RM338,000, looks like (it is for) a big sporting event but only telematches (were played). And if we look at other sporting events, the contingents have to prepare their own sportswear, while here, the organisers are supplying it," he said.

Teng commented that it was not the norm for organisers to provide the apparel for sporting events.

Khairiyah corrected Teng and said the amount was also for the staff who had helped in the three-day long games.

"They were for the drivers, the police and other staff," she said, adding that the purchases included packed meals. He then pointed out that in the programme given to them, no telematch was listed

This was countered by Khairiyah, who said that in her schedule, the telematches were listed for Aug 4.

"But our programme does not show this. All it shows on that date is a team-building exercise at Sunway Lagoon Theme Park," said Teng.

Khairiyah then added that over RM 30,000 was paid by PNSB for three pairs of batik wear for the Sultan of Selangor, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Jeanne Abdullah, before being asked to testify on a 2007 trip by the wife of former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Khir Toyo, Datin Zahrah Kechik to visit her son in Melbourne.

When asked about the trip, Khairiyah told the committee that she had received instructions directly from Zahrah for PNSB to foot the bill for the trip and to accompany her on the three day visit.

Over RM14, 000 was spent to purchase return business class and economy class tickets sometime in December 2007, she said, adding that the trip was not an official visit.

Khairiyah was then asked by Teng about a Balkis charity visit to Cambodia in 2002, where USD11,000 was listed as being set aside for "contingency" expenses, while the other expenses, including the donations made were listed in Ringgit Malaysia.

Khairiyah replied that the other expenses were also paid in US Dollars, but were not converted in the accounts.

When grilled about a gift of a watch worth almost RM160,000 by PNSB to Khir Toyo, who was then chairman of PNSB, she said it was merely a "token of appreciation" which had been decided unanimously by the board.

"A token is something small, given as a small mark of appreciation. A certificate is a token," quipped Teng, who asked why the gift was given discreetly, when it was intended as a show of appreciation""

Which, of course, makes news like this suspect:

DATUK Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi could not have given his wife a better present for their 31st wedding anniversary.

He garnered the highest number of votes for one of the three vice-president posts.

The 55-year-old Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department secured 1,592 votes in the eight-cornered fight.

The Bagan Datoh MP, who succeeded in his first attempt in the vice-president’s race, said he had never expected to win, what more winning the highest number of votes.

Marital strength: Ahmad Zahid celebrating his victory with Hamidah at the Putra World Centre Thursday night.

“I never expected it at all. All of us are equal in this race. We are all capable in our own way.

“I would like to dedicate this victory to my wife (Datin Seri) Hamidah (Khamis) in conjunction with our wedding anniversary,” said the elated Ahmad Zahid."

Yeah, best present indeed.

Meanwhile, what's Taib been up to....from NST

KUCHING: Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud suspects a letter purportedly signed by him to solicit funds from timber tycoons could be aimed at sabotaging Barisan Nasional in the Batang Ai by-election on April 7.

He said he had nothing to do with the letter that was sent to a timber tycoon in Sibu.

"I hope this is not a trick by people who want to cause trouble in the Batang Ai by-election," Taib said in a statement yesterday.

The statement advised anyone who received such letters to report the matter to the authorities as BN does not solicit donations. (sic)

....

In support of Cows. This just in..(NST)

KOTA BARU: Muslims who portray their Islamic image by wearing robes and skullcaps, but smoke, are more despicable than cows, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said yesterday.

He said cigarette smoking was banned in Islam, and doctors, because the habit was hazardous to health.

"For example, a cow which defecates in the middle of the road, (we) cannot take legal action against it because it has no brain and cannot think. But human beings, who have brains, for them to do something which is wrong in religion and health-wise, what more when they are in an attire which symbolises Islam (wearing of skullcaps and robes), they can be regarded as being more despicable than cows," he said in his weekly religious talk here.

Totally agree about about the smoker bit but puhlease lah, spare the cows. Surely can use some other euphemism!
Save the Cows!!!

And can this get any dafter? (From M'sian Insider)

"Dr M says will rejoin Umno. Mukhriz says it will happen when Pak Lah quits as PM.
"

Former prime minister and Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Saturday he will rejoin Umno.

He said he would announce the date of his return to the party at a suitable time “after (sorting out) several matters”.

Someone, puhlease, tell this old man his time is over. I guess it wont be those a********g goons at Umno. That is, after all, their culture.

An update on the lady who died in a cosmetic surgery clinic in Ampang, and guess whos in hot soup.

"Liposuction patient was looking forward to Umno meeting

THE woman who died following liposuction was a Puteri Umno Ampang division member, reported Kosmo!

“I am sad that she can’t wear the new clothes she had bought for the Umno general assembly,” said her husband, Zaharuddin Zainuddin, 35.

He said his wife, Noraini Mohd Ghazali, 30, bought three dresses to wear during the party’s general assembly.

“A couple of days before the tragedy, she looked very excited to attend the meeting,” he said at Kampung Tok Uban, Pasir Mas, on Thursday.

He said his wife did not inform him that she wanted to go to the clinic.

“I had previously advised her to stop doing liposuction because I was worried it would harm her health,” he said.

He added that he did not expect his wife to return to the clinic for further treatments.

Zaharuddin said he was told that his wife was unconscious when he arrived at the clinic.

He said his wife often went for beauty treatments as she really put the emphasis on physical appearances."

According to an initial report, she normally weighed about 50 to 52 kg. Eh what? That's my weight! Okay so I admit to having some 'love handles' around the middle here and there but does that call for something as drastic as liposuction? Ladies, beware, vanity can kill.

There's just no end to life's intricacies....

“Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).

A day not to be repeated.

Had to report in for counselling today from 1 to 4 pm. I swear they put had it in for me by putting me in last for this Sat shift. Just as well I missed the Open Day shift. As it turns out, there was a promotional general knowledge quiz being conducted at the main block for Taman Seafield, Subang school, and this girl, probably a prefect came and enquired regarding the course, fees and left with brochures. Other than that, zilch.

However, the highlight of the day: meeting Lyn of ADP and Radin of Matriculation who were in the same boat. Lyn is a bubbly life wire, exuding positivity and totally someone you would want to listen to and sign up with. Radin is ever the gentlemen, helping me to connect the wifi and just sharing tips here and there. Plus, I met the lady from the carpark and she didn't want to accept my $$ for the parking!! Sigh, there ARE nice people around!

After work, drove straight to IU for refreshment and generall just chilling. Stopped at Thai Noodle House to a snck. Here's some random pics:

Nice: Hospitality with a Heart.

Nice little starter: Thai fish cake, fried popiah, prawn popiah, veg basket and salad.

Not so nice: the price: a whopping RM27.60 for starter and fresh coconut!

Wifi at the restaurent sucked big time so hightailed it to Starbucks where we are now!

Okay, so now back to the morning events. From RBC: We all have stories to tell about circumstances that have shown us our need to listen before we speak. We’re naturally tempted to come to quick judgments and react angrily. The book of James gives us these three practical exhortations to deal with life’s stressful situations:“Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).In life’s stresses, let’s be “doers of the Word” (v.22), and take the time to listen and show restraint with our words and anger today

Basically, YTL Hotel school of management was having an Open Day. C had decided she would prefer to stay put in PJ and fixed her mind on KDU hence the reluctance. After immense cajoling, finally agreed but circumstances changed and all 3 ended up following. Perhaps God is speaking to me to put things in His hands and just let Him handle everything. Forgive me, Lord, sometimes, we are so one tracked that we leave no room for You. Help me to put my trust in You to resolve the situation to Your Divine Will.

So here we are, one blogging, one completing homework, and the other updating her CV, and one more letting off steam at the arcade! What a combination! Missing Hash right now!!

Here we are:

Guilin pics

12th march - Arrival in GuilinFirst sight of guilin; cloudy or is it hazy day?

Arrival in Guilin city.

This the view from outside our hotel in guilin: RMB 200 per nite. Its considered 3 star; next to it is the 4 star Vienna Hotel which directly faces the Banyan Tree Lake Park.

Vendor selling Ox Horn combs outside the hotel.

It was a dull almost wintry day despite the fact that it was suppose to be springtime. After checking in we proceeded to dinner just round the corner. Among the first dishes that arrived: fish!

More food.

HotPot on a cold night: wonderful!

After dinner, with the drizzle coming down, we recced the area around the hotel for medium and budget hotels. Turns out this was a major tourist area, as round the corner we happened upon a night market. Here's one of the stalls selling bbq food on stick.

We walked round the beauthiful Banyan Tree Lake Park. Unfortunately, the pics didnt turn out well here: too dark. We strolled along the main thoroughfare of Guilin taking in the sights of the main shopping streets before returning to our hotel. Not knowing how to turn the heater on, it was a cold cold night!

End of Day 1.

Guilin-Day 1

After the ignominous start to the trip, we landed in Guilin airport with no further incident and was met by our guide, Siow Tung who directed us to the van he had hired to ferry us to the city. The van used the regular road and here was quite a bit of traffic around. Perhaps it was the evening rush hour. I looked around at the scenery but was sorely disappointed that while there were a few of the famed limestone hills, they were hardly significant nor worth mentioning. This is Guilin?

Dropped of behind our hotel, we had to pass through a lane of rubble to get to the front. Here Siow Tung checked us in and after dropping off our luggage, proceeded for dinner at a restaurent around the corner from the hotel. It must be a popular restaurent as most tables were occupied with Chinese men mostly dressed in black and, a normal feature of China, most puffing away after a meal. Thankfully, we were led to a separate room and made sure the door remained shut to prevent the smoke from leaking in.

Being the only Mandarin speaking one in the group, Woon did the ordering. We were so hungry most of the dishes tasted wonderful. No pics here but will upload later. After dinner, we decided to do a recce of the hotels in the vicinity and ended up taking a walk along the main market thoroughfare of Guilin. We checked out a few lower end hotels for those who may be interested to backpack and ended up at the Banyan Tree Park which was beautifully lit. (Pics later)

It had been drizzling since we left the restaurent and the rain got heavier as we walked along the main street. I stopped to buy a cap (Pink) and we return to the hotel for a good night's rest. The weather was freezing, not to mention wet, and the wind blowing did not help matter. What, I wondered did the next day hold?

Back from Guilin!

A funny thing happened on the way to China: our flight got recalled an hour after take off (we had already flown past Penang) and the pilot decided for safety's sake to return to LCCT. According to the stewardess, it's just a minor technical fault but its better to be safe than sorry. We were offloaded back to the transit waiting lounge which was packed like sardines with travellers, but nonetheless, manageable.

No problem for us, but a couple of tour groups from Kelanton and elsewhere had to miss their first day's itinery. To make up for the inconvenience, Airasia provided us with basic nasi lemak packets; not bad considering we'd already had our breakfast on board. While Wendy et al wondered if we could put in a claim for the Airasia compensation for delayed flights over four hours ($$), AirAsia was smart enough to time their delay and we were allowed to board at 11.30. Those waiting for the return flight would, however, qualify for compensation! After being in the Guilin airport 2 hours, its not a great experience and I'd willingly forgoe the $$ to get back on time!

So much for the initial entry. Will post details of trip and pics later. Back to work today and a full time table!!

IN MEMORIAM - MYRA (1997 - 2009

She came to us from the SPCA; We were looking for a short haired pet but she won us over with her lovely fur and soulful eyes. She has a history of heartworms. She had a short sharp bark that would wake us up in the nite. She was good watch dog and was prone to snapping at stangers' feet. She loved cat food and would sneak into the kitchen for a 'treat' sometimes. She has lovely long wavy fur but as she grew older was prone to ticks and mites so much that we would spend hours de-ticking her. She loved walks and would bark excitedly and jump about whenever she saw us getting ready to go. She was always the loudest then; She had a bad ear infection problem but she was healthy and sweet and we didnt mind that she could no longer hear us call her in her later years.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES AND THE GOOD TIMES; WE LOVE YOU ALWAYS!!

Dilemma

TO RUN OR NOT?

Promises - an update on the KL flood fiasco

News report from the Star (MSM):

PETALING JAYA: In just two hours on Tuesday, Kuala Lumpur saw more rain than it normally would in two months.

Not just that. The rain, which started in the afternoon, was so intense that it caused Sungai Gombak to quickly swell and overflow.

This resulted in the flood havoc in several parts of Kuala Lumpur. Vehicles in underground car parks were submerged and thousands of motorists were caught for hours in a traffic gridlock that continued past 9.30pm.

Describing the rainfall as exceptional, Department of Irrigation and Drainage director-general Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman said 75mm of rainfall was recorded within two hours.

“Normally, we receive about 30mm in a month. The rain (Tuesday) was so heavy and the intensity so great that Sungai Gombak could not cope with the buildup of water.

Flood damage: Sundry shop owner Chin Wing Ching assessing the damage to his shop at Jalan Rahmat off Jalan Tun Ismail after flash floods hit Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday evening. The intense rainfall caused Sungai Gombak to overflow and submerge parts of the city. — CHUA KOK HWA / The Star

“Coupled with the capacity of Sungai Damansara and the drainage system in the city, the amount of water was just too much over a short period of time.

“Tuesday’s situation was serious and caused a lot of distress to many people, and we want the public to understand why it happened,” he said yesterday.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART), generally seen as the answer to the city flood woes, was not “utilised” as it was designed to divert excess water from Sungai Klang.

Ahmad Husaini said SMART was not closed to traffic as the concentration of the rain was not over Sungai Klang.

However, he said, once the Batu and Jinjang flood retention ponds were completed by the middle of this year, such situations could be averted.

The ponds have an increased capacity of 4.5 million cubic metres and 2.5 million cubic metres respectively, enough to hold excess water from Sungai Gombak and Sungai Keroh.

A Meteorological Services Department officer said Tuesday’s rain was due to weak and variable winds which caused an unstable atmosphere.

“We are now towards the end of the north-east monsoon which brings about sudden changes of atmosphere. The inter-monsoon season is expected to start in April,” he said.

Thunderstorms can be expected in the afternoon over the next few days in the Klang Valley and the west coast but the rainfall was not expected to be unusual.

............

Right remember that when they finish spending RMXYZ million on the drainage system and it starts raining....in the meantime, the poor sods working/living in downtown KL has to suffer shit (sic).

SMART? Wat SMART?

The day the heavens opened up and let the forces of nature let rip onto KL city....

It must been catastrophic for those working in KL especially Jalan Ipoh, PWTC, Jalan Duta and its environs. Yet another thunderstorm rippied through the city and within a few minutes, caused hours of delay, and $$ losses for businesses in KL. Here's a news report:

Chaos as flash floods hit city

KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Gombak overflowed its banks causing chaos that had not been seen in more than three decades in the heart of the city yesterday evening.

Areas which were hit for the first time included the basement car park of the Putra World Trade Centre and large stretches of Jalan Ipoh where vehicles were completely submerged.

The other areas affected by the flash floods included Bulatan Dato Onn, Pudu Raya, Pantai Dalam, Bangsar, Segambut, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Pekeliling, Jalan Kinabalu, and Jalan Duta.

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall emergency unit spokesman said water levels started rising during a two-hour downpour which began just after 4pm.

Thousands of office workers were stranded in their buildings when power supply was cut off and thousands more endured more than three- hour jams for journeys which normally took 30 minutes.
At PWTC, more than 1,000 visitors and staff were trapped in darkness after a power outage. When they made it to the basement, they were shocked to find their vehicles submerged.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said they sent divers to the basement car park to look for victims, but fortunately there were none.

He said the basement car parks in surrounding buildings were also affected by flash floods.

Azizan added that the Sentul Fire and Rescue Department station which is situated just across PWTC was also hit by floods.

At Jalan Ipoh, which rarely sees flash floods, water levels were recorded at between one and two metres high, completely submerging vehicles.

To add to the city folks' woes, RapidKL's Kelana Jaya line LRT service, was also hit by a power failure which disrupted train operations for more than an hour beginning 5.58pm.

Power was restored gradually from 7.15pm and the train service resumed in stages. Normal service was restored at 7.47 this evening.

RapidKL chief executive officer Suffian Baharuddin said due to the power failure, massive passenger congestion was experienced at the LRT stations along the Kelana Jaya line. It took RapidKL several hours to clear the congestion.

Hers' s more pics:

Disastrous huh? Imagine if you'd been one of those whose car got flooded or stuck at PWTC. The MSM are of course downplaying the magnitude of the event by only cursory reporting, but questions are being raised about THE SMART tunnel which was supposed to contain the deluge of water from storms and prevent such occurences of floods. So what happened?

Here's some comments from The Malaysian Insider regarding the news:

Again?
written by MNair, March 03, 2009
Whatever happened to the SMART tunnel? Not so smart anymore, eh? What a waste of billions!
SMART Tunnel??

Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in KL & Government spending good money on silly project
written by kkh, March 03, 2009
Refer to the Opinion by John Lee on Feb 27 on Government spending good money on silly project and my comment on Feb 28.

Today incident has proved that the project implemented is not up to mark and with the extra water from Pahang, it will keep the main river all the time full with water and if there is rain, it will definitely create the flash floor problem and create a traffic standstill in KL and Selangor and certain parties are making money out of it and the rakyat suffer.

The main reason that the flash flood occur is that previously when there is rain, the rain water will be soak into the earth and it take hours or days to reach the river, with the development going one, all surface is either been concreted or tar, and this make the rain water reach the river within minute or second.

The best solution to reduce this flash flood is to enforce the retention pond on the ground to beautify the landscape or retention tank on top of condo or apartment, from the pond or tank, additional piping to use the water for flashing toilet, gardening, washing cars will not cost much and this will definitely good for the environment and use less treated water and this will definitely avoid the water privatise company from sucking more money from the rakyat.

By reduce of the flash flood, there will be less traffic jam and we can safe the precious time of our rakyat and less wastage of fuel which is one of the richest resources of our country where I do not know how was it been manage and how waste the wealth been distribute to the rakyat or just benefits certain party or crony. Not to mention the reluctant of the government to improvement the public transportation to save fuel to reduce the burden of the rakyat to avoid purchasing cars to avoid the below burdens

1)Paying the heavy duty for the car. (heavy duty on imported car)
2)Paying interest to the bank as most car purchase is on loan.
3)Paying the tolls rate which is keep on increasing
4)Paying the road taxes.
5)Paying the licences fees
6)Paying the fine if do not follow the law strictly, example wearing the safety belt at the back seat at the speed of less that 80km in the city, this is only encourage corruption for the none professional police and JPJ offices. While this is been fine, the person who break the speed limit and endanger other peoples life can get away easily by paying the nominal fines and the reckless driver who kill many and there is not heavy penalty to the driver and the bus company director.
7)Burning the fuel away so the Petronas can make extra profit but do not how they distribute the wealth of the nation
8)Burning the fuel away where the fuel price is higher than the market rate.

With the economy crisis, BN and PR should put there different aside and look into how to improve the economy and the welfare of Malaysia Rakyat and make sure all the project going to be implemented is transparent and benefit all Rakyat and not only benefit the crony of certain party.

Collecting toll is the main purpose, UMNO BN only smart for money.
Who's the not so smart one here?
written by oik, March 04, 2009
If anyone here cared to check, they'd know that the SMART tunnel diverts floodwater from a different river than the ones that overflowed at PWTC and Jalan Ipoh yesterday. Dataran Merdeka used to get flooded quite frequently when there were very heavy downpours. Was it flooded yesterday?

....................................

On reflection of yesterday evening, it was a blessing in disguise that we left late for the run 'cos by that time, it was pouring and I persuaded the girls to stay in (an inducement in the form of a Paandi dinner) rather than driving into KL for Carmen's pilates class. (Turns out got cancelled probably due to same reason) By the time we reached the NKVE and closer to Shah Alam, the rain had subsided, or rather we were away from the storm clouds. Though it threatened to pour before and during the run, the winds blew in the right direction and we were blessed with fine cool weather for the circle and on down on site. (Run was incomplete for many as the 2nd? 3rd? check could not be broken despite sweepers due to miscommunication!)

Again, GOD IS GOOD!!
